Spirit Mountain Community Fund Awards Grant To Pioneer Museum
March 3, 2010
The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum has announced the award of an $8,975 grant from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund to establish an eco-friendly parking lot and informational kiosk at the Museum’s property at Kilchis Point. This will begin development of this wetland area on Tillamook Bay for recreational hiking, bird watching, kayaking, and cultural education.
Kilchis Point site is considered to be one of the largest and most prominent cultural sites of Native Americans along the North Oregon and Washington coasts. By funding the grant request, Shelley Hanson, Director of the Spirit Mountain Community Fund, congratulated the Museum “on partnering with us and the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde on an area of significant Tribal history and culture. Our people lived in the Tillamook area and we’re excited to share our history with the visitors of Kilchis Point.”
Construction on the parking area and kiosk will begin in concert with wetlands delineation and a cultural assessment of the area.
